Due to the large space requirements of the photovoltaic (PV) generator, PV systems are especially threatened by lightning discharges during thunderstorms. Causes for surges in PV systems are inductive or capacitive voltages derived from lightning discharges, as well as lightning surges and switching operations in the upstream power supply system. Lightning surges in the PV system can damage PV modules and inverters, which can have serious consequences for the operation of the system.
DEHN’s DEHNguard S PV SCI 600 and DEHNguard S PV SCI 150 are single-pole, modular surge protective devices for PV systems earthed on the DC side. These surge protective devices were tested to prEN 50539-11 and are designed for the international market. The DEHNguard S PV SCI 600 is UL-certified.
An additional DC fuse was added to the proven combined disconnection and short circuiting device with thermodynamic control to ensure safe replacement of protection modules without arc formation in case of an arrester overload. This synergy of technologies reduces the risk of damage to arresters due to installation and insulation faults in the PV circuit. It considerably reduces the risk of fire for an overloaded arrester and changes an overloaded arrester to a safe electrical state without disrupting the operation of the PV system.
