Low-noise DACs

25 January 2012 Analogue, Mixed Signal, LSI

Analog Devices has introduced new D/A (digital-to-analog) converters (DACs) that provide high accuracy and low noise, simplifying the design of precision instrumentation and analytical equipment.

The devices incorporate integrated precision reference conditioning circuitry, making them system ready and providing a reduction in board space compared to standalone data converters.

The high linearity and low noise of the AD5790 and AD5780 reduce the need to calibrate systems for nonlinearity or to time-average multiple measurements. The high stability and low drift of the converters over time and temperature reduce the need to compensate systems for ageing and temperature effects.

Precision analog system design often entails the complex engineering challenges of combining a precision DAC with a significant amount of signal conditioning and support circuitry to eliminate nonlinearity, minimise thermoelectric and noise sources, and reduce offset errors. The integrated precision reference buffers incorporated into the AD5790 and AD5780 simplify this development effort for high-end systems, simultaneously reducing performance risk and design cycles.

The AD5790 offers ±2 LSB accuracy at 20 bits, while the AD5780 features ±1 LSB accuracy at 18-bit over temperature. Guaranteed monotonic, the devices specify –1 LSB max DNL. The converters feature 1,1 μV peak-to-peak, low-frequency output noise, 9 nV/rt-Hz noise spectral density and less than 0,05 ppm/°C temperature drift. The output can be configured for standard unipolar (+5 V, +10 V) or bipolar (±5 V, ±10 V) output ranges. The devices, which use a three-wire serial interface that operates at clock rates up to 50 MHz, feature a 2,5 μs analog update rate.
