Boost converter with fault protection

7 March 2012 Power Electronics / Power Management

New from Linear Technology is the LT8582, a dual independent channel, step-up DC/DC converter with integrated fault protection features for output shorts, input/output over-voltages and over-temperature conditions. Each channel of the device uses two integrated 42 V switches: a 1,7 A master switch and a 1,3 A slave switch that can be tied together for a total current limit of 3 A.

The IC operates from an input voltage range of 2,5 V to 22 V with transient protection to 40 V, making it suitable for applications with input sources ranging from a single-cell Li-Ion to automotive inputs. It is ideal for many local power supply designs as each channel can be independently configured as either a boost, SEPIC, inverting or flyback converter. The combination of a 4 x 7 mm DFN package and tiny externals ensures a very compact footprint.

The LT8582’s low VCESAT switches, 0,27 V (tied together at 2,75 A) can deliver efficiencies up to 90%. A ‘power good’ pin is offered for ease of use when event-based sequencing is required. For high voltage outputs, the device’s slave switch enables high-power charge pump topologies which are very efficient and require few external components. The LT8582’s switching frequency can be programmed via a single resistor or synchronised to an external clock between 200 kHz and 2,5 MHz, minimising external component sizes and avoiding ‘noise critical’ frequency bands.

Under-voltage lockout (UVLO) is user adjustable for optimal system performance. Each channel requires a single feedback resistor to set the output voltage. Other features include external synchronisation capability, output short circuit protection and frequency foldback.
