DC-DC filter modules for railway applications

18 April 2012 Power Electronics / Power Management

Vicor announced two new 500 W additions to its family of filtered input attenuator modules (FIAMs) for railway applications. The new FIAM110 and FIAM072 provide protection for onboard equipment and systems against the effects of power-line transients, EMI (electromagnetic interference) and excessive inrush currents.

Onboard power supplies in rail environments are subject to severe levels of transients and noise that can be disruptive or damaging to systems such as lighting, communications and information displays unless properly filtered. The FIAM110 and FIAM072 meet EN50121-3-2 for EMI filtering and EN50155/EN50121-3-2 for transient protection – requirements that are crucial for rail applications. In addition, they conform to RIA 12 surge and transient requirements and are qualified for demanding environmental standards.

The FIAM072 accepts an input voltage of 43 to 110 V d.c. and the FIAM110 accepts an input voltage of 66 to 154 V d.c. Both provide up to 500 W of output power, with efficiencies up to 98%, and remote on/off control. The modules are in the industry-standard ‘half-brick’ footprint measuring 58 x 56 x 12,7 mm, which is ideal for space constrained designs, and are compatible with the Mini, Micro and Maxi or VI/VE-200 and VI/VE-J00 DC-DC converters from Vicor’s brick product portfolio.
