Photoelectric sensors

27 June 2012 Test & Measurement

The cylindrical shape of the CY-100 photoelectric sensor series from Panasonic Electric Works, as well as the many models in which the sensors are available, make them well suited to handle a multitude of tasks. The sensor was designed to be used in industrial environments, and comes in four types: through-beam with a sensing distance of up to 15 m; retroreflective with a sensing distance of up to 4 m; retroreflective with polarisation filter and a sensing distance of up to 2 m; and diffuse reflective types with sensing distances of up to 100 mm or 600 mm.

The availability of a wide range of models within the series means the CY-100 sensors can solve relatively complex tasks. One such example is the ability to recognise reflective objects thanks to integrated polarisation filters. The side view type makes applications possible in cramped spaces. All models have an M18 male thread for easy and quick mounting.

The sensors are available with a cable or M12 plug-in connector. The series has an operating voltage of 12–24 V d.c. and a short circuit-proof PNP or NPN transistor output. They are enclosed in a robust PBT housing and boast an IP67 degree of protection. Integrated status LEDs allow the operator to check the function of the sensor at a glance.

In addition, the through-beam type comes equipped with a test input. This feature ensures safe and reliable operation, also for controlling gates or applications in extremely dirty environments. The sensitivity of the 600 mm type diffuse reflective type can be configured for exact detection. The retroreflective type with polarisation filter includes a red LED that simplifies adjustment and commissioning. Various reflectors, mounting brackets and plug-in cables can be ordered separately.

CY-100 series sensors lend themselves to the following kinds of applications, among others: sorting, counting and palletising while monitoring production and packaging lines, and position and liquid level control of transparent containers in the beverage and filling industry. Moreover, they can also be used to monitor gate control and passages.
