Philips Semiconductors' power management portfolio covers a broad range of types of products. Some key families in its extensive high efficiency power conversion range are described below.

Key families are:

* SiliconMAX: reduced size and increased efficiency in SMPSs. Philips Semiconductors' innovation in PowerMOS technology, SiliconMAX extends the established performance benefits of TrenchMOS technology, marrying extended voltage switching ranges up to 200 V with very low RDS(on) values and lower switching losses. According to the company, this has many application benefits, such as higher conversion efficiencies and smaller magnetic components in power supply designs, or reduced package size for a given dissipation that leads to reduced heatsinking and lower overall component count. SiliconMAX is a major step forward in reducing size, increasing efficiency and lowering component cost in many power switching applications.

* STARplug: revolutionary power plug technology. Philips Semiconductors' latest family of power plug ICs are SMPS controllers that operate directly from any rectified universal mains supply to deliver low power, compact, cost-effective solutions for power plugs and small supplies. Essentially a turn-key solution, they decrease design-in time in applications across many markets such as audio/video, white goods, personal care, communications and networking, etc.

With a high voltage power switch and circuitry for start-up directly from the rectified mains voltage, they are available in two ranges - TEA152x for Europe and TEA151x for USA/Japan. Under zero load conditions they reach low standby power levels (0,1 W). As standard, the STARplug family offers direct SMPS operation with an on-chip start-up current source, and a comprehensive range of safety features ensures high reliability.

* Battery management ICs: Philips Semiconductors has a broad selection of ICs to cover the complete portable power and battery-management energy chain, for all common battery types. DC/DC conversion is an essential function to match battery voltage to design requirements. The range of CMOS DC/DC converters offers superior efficiency in power conversion and includes the TEA1204T and TEA1206T up and down-converters with fixed or variable outputs.

The recently-released TEA1207 is ideal for low/mid-power cost-sensitive applications and is especially suitable for down-converting Li-Ion or three-cell NiCd/NiMH battery voltages. The latest TEA1210TS high-efficiency, high-power DC/DC converter is designed specifically to allow designers of more power-hungry portable devices to switch to inexpensive, simple and safer NiMH or NiCD cells, instead of Li-Ion. Overall cost savings can be around 40% and, using just two AAA NiCd/NiMH cells, also reduces battery pack footprint.

Manufactured in advanced BiCMOS technology, the range of fast-charge ICs is comprehensive, offering a variety of integrated features and integrating the complex mix of requirements necessary for all battery types, and for linear and switched mode systems.

The SAA1504T protects single Li-Ion cells and can be integrated inside battery packs.
