500 W power supplies

22 August 2012 Power Electronics / Power Management

TDK-Lambda has launched the GWS500 series of ‘green’ power supplies. Complying with the energy saving requirements of the ErP (Energy-related Products) directive, the AC-DC power supply uses innovative design techniques to combine high efficiency, high power density and low standby power with the confidence of a five-year warranty.

The power supply is well-suited to a broad range of industrial applications, including ATE, automation and instrumentation. Rated at 500 W, it combines a 1U form factor with 105 x 218 mm footprint and 90% typical efficiency to achieve high power density.

Offered in four models, the GWS500 supplies nominal outputs of 12 V (42 A), 24 V (21 A), 36 V (14 A) and 48 V (10,5 A). Outputs can be user-adjusted by up to 20% depending on the model type, and the 24 V and 36 V models have a peak power rating of 600 W.

With a flat efficiency curve averaging at 89%, from 25% to 100% load (which exceeds the ErP requirement of 87%) the GWS500 operates from -25°C to 70°C with suitable derating. It is reverse fan cooled (exhale) to mitigate contamination risk.

The units feature over-voltage, overtemperature and over-current protection (constant current mode for 24 V, 36 V and 48 V models, 12 V model in hiccup mode). Models in the GWS500 series also feature a sub-0,5 W standby power, 5 V/0,3 A standby output, remote on/off, DC-good signal and a voltage programming function as standard.

All GWS500 models operate from a 85–264 V a.c. input with active power factor correction to ensure EN61000-3-2 compliance. CE marked in accordance with the LV Directive, the power supplies conform to EN55022 and CISPR22 Class B conducted and radiated EMC, and meets CSA/IEC60950-1 Ed 2 and UL/EN60950-1 safety approvals.
