Field portable PMD measurement system for long-haul optical networks

1 August 2001 Test & Measurement

Spescom MeasureGraph has announced the availability of the next-generation polarisation mode dispersion measurement system from NetTest (GN Nettest). The NetTest Nexus is the only field portable PMD measurement system that offers up to 57 dB dynamic range for system designers and network operators to measure the bandwidth limiting effects of PMD in high bit rate long-haul optical networks, according to the company.

Product specialist, Hilton Preston at Spescom MeasureGraph, says the communications industry is on the verge of wide scale deployment of 40 Gbps systems, which require accurate PMD measurements and proper dispersion compensation engineering for these systems to operate with acceptable bit error rates. "High bit rate, DWDM system designers and network operators will benefit from the Nexus' industry leading capabilities by having a comprehensive characterisation of the PMD present in their networks."

The Nexus builds on NetTest's success with previous PMD instruments and incorporates valuable industry feedback. This makes measuring PMD in single-mode fibre and DWDM systems faster and easier according to the company.

NetTest gives the following as unique features for its Nexus system:

* Highest dynamic range in the industry allows for PMD testing of links greater than 200 km.

* Automatic range selection and a typical measurement speed of less than 15 s dramatically reduces test time.

* Software, colour touchscreen, and single-button testing is user-friendly. In addition, the Nexus can be controlled remotely, offering the ultimate solution for long-term network monitoring.

* Increased scan range allows for high PMD measurements of up to 130 ps for extreme applications in as little as 160 seconds.

* Large selection of test wavelengths including 1310, 1420, 1520, 1550, 1590 and 1620 nm, provides comprehensive PMD testing of the C, L and S-transmission bands.

* Battery-powered integrated receiver, in conjunction with a battery-powered source allows high portability.
