Modular frequency synthesizers

1 August 2001 Test & Measurement

Aeroflex Comstron, a division of Aeroflex Laboratories, is a world leader in the design, development and manufacture of wide band, fast switching signal generators and measurement systems. These include frequency synthesizers, phase noise measurement systems, wireless test products, electronic systems, subsystems, specialised multifunction modules and filters.

The company's FS5000 is part of a high-level family of frequency synthesizers. Construction is truly modular - GPO connectors couple submodules to form modules. This miniaturised construction method makes it easy to build customised implementations of the architecture. Radar and radar upgrade applications include multimode radars, frequency agile radar upgrades, improved subclutter visibility supporting MTI functions, ground penetration radar and multiple channel receivers.

The instrument uses a frequency generation technique called direct analog frequency synthesis. Direct analog frequency synthesis is inherently rugged and reliable as there are no loops to unlock and no vibration sensitive oscillators.

The following are offered:

Key specs are: switching speed <200 ns; output power +10 dBm; flatness ±2 dB; amplitude settling within 2 dB of final level <200 ns.
