In keeping with the open-source spirit of the Raspberry Pi development platform, Alex Chadwick of the University of Cambridge’s Computer Lab has put together a tutorial course on how to create an operating system for the increasingly popular platform, and made it available free of charge.
Located at www.cl.cam.ac.uk/freshers/raspberrypi/tutorials/os/, the course guides users as young as 16 through the process of developing very basic operating systems in assembly code on the Raspberry Pi. According to the developer, the tutorial should be accessible even to those without any programming experience, as it assumes no prior knowledge of operating systems development or assembly code.
In order to complete the course, all that is necessary is a Raspberry Pi with an SD card and power supply, as well as another computer running a version of Linux, Microsoft Windows or Mac OS X, capable of writing to the SD card, and installing software. In terms of software, a GNU compiler tool chain that targets ARMv6 is required.
