Bourns has announced the launch of its gas discharge tube (GDT) product line. Bourns obtained the GDT product line through the acquisition of the Communication Protection Product lines from Joslyn's JESC Division.
The GDT products prevent injury to personnel and damage to equipment from transient voltage disturbances by reacting as fast as a crowbar device. When an electrical surge exceeds the breakdown voltage of the device, the gas inside the GDT becomes ionised and conduction takes place within a fraction of a microsecond. When the voltage returns to normal operating levels, the GDT returns to its high impedance state and is transparent to the circuit.
The Bourns GDT product line features industry-leading three-electrode balanced Triguard and 5 mm two-electrode products. Its patented surtab grade failsafe design can be combined with various lead configurations to allow customers multiple applications with the industry's lowest contact resistance in short circuit mode.
"The addition of the GDT products to Bourns' circuit protection line is a perfect fit," said H. Wolfgang Oertel, Vice President, Technology, Bourns Communication Protection Products. "Offering GDTs in combination with other Bourns circuit protection products provides us with a much broader customer base and proves Bourns' commitment to providing total circuit protection solutions."
Bourns' GDTs can be used in many applications, including telecommunications, CATV/broadband applications, RF antennas and equipment, consumer electronics, printed circuit boards, automotive and many more.
