Ultra-bright blue LED

31 October 2012 Opto-Electronics

With the Oslon Signal, Osram Opto Semiconductors has introduced a new LED that boasts ultra-bright blue light. Made using a special thin-film chip technology, it can be operated at a high current while providing a sustained, powerful, bright blue light, making it suitable for signal lights for the police and emergency services.

The LED produces a blue colour with a luminous flux of 52 lumens at 350 mA. Its wavelength of 472 nm and all colour bins (groups) comply with EU and US standards for signalling, in particular for emergency vehicle lighting. The package platform of the Oslon family, consisting of a ceramic substrate with built-in connecting contacts and a silicone lens, remains stable and resistant to ageing caused by the shortwave blue light.

The Oslon Signal includes chips of the high-performance UX:3 technology, which are capable of operating at high performance levels even at high currents. This is an important aspect, as blue signal light is often pulsed and therefore requires from high currents even greater luminous power.

Despite its power, the LED measures only 3 x 3 mm. It is equipped with an insulated heatsink, so it can be mounted easily and conveniently, especially in combination with a conventional FR4 board.

The lens has a radiation angle of 80° and provides a highly symmetrical light output; the LED can therefore also be mounted in existing emergency vehicle lighting applications.
