Wireless data acquisition module

31 October 2012 Test & Measurement

BeanAir has released a new analog input, low-power wireless data acquisition solution for remote monitoring and process supervision applications. The BeanDevice AN-420 integrates an embedded data-logger with a storage capacity of up to 1 million measurements, which can be used to log data when the wireless sensor network cannot be reached on a remote site.

The device employs an IEEE 802.15.4 wireless protocol stack with antenna diversity and features an integrated, software configurable sensor power supply of 4,5 V to 20 V. Data acquisitions are stored on the embedded Flash and then transmitted to the BeanGateway whenever a wireless sensor network is established.

The unit’s autonomy is enhanced by the ability to directly power the connected sensor (4,5-20 V). This power supply is completely servo-controlled by the embedded software, which allows high measurement accuracy in cases of radio-metric measurement applications.

The power supply is powered by an integrated lithium-ion battery and the charger has high-precision battery monitoring features like over-voltage protection, over-current/short-circuit protection, under-voltage protection, battery temperature monitoring and current accumulation measurement.

Several data acquisition modes are available on the AN-420, such as low duty cycle mode in which the data acquisition is immediately transmitted by radio at a transmission frequency configurable from 1 second to 24 hours. In alarm mode, the measured value is transmitted by radio whenever an alarm threshold (fixed by the user) is detected.

Survey mode operates similarly to the alarm mode but the device sends a beacon frame frequently informing its current status. In streaming packet mode, all measured values are transmitted by packet within a continuous flow at 400 samples per second maximum.

Streaming mode transmits all measured values in real-time within a continuous flow at 100 samples per second maximum. Finally, math mode calculates values such as the mean value, maximum value, minimum value and standard deviation on sample time series and transmits them by radio.
