Power-over-Ethernet controllers

6 February 2013 Power Electronics / Power Management

Microsemi has debuted new front-end powered device (PD) interface controllers for high-power HDBase-T and four-pair Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) applications.

The PD70210/PD70211 are compliant with Power-over-HDBaseT (PoH) and receive up to 95 W using an internal field-effect transistor (FET). The devices enable wider reach for PoE communications applications including outdoor IP cameras, small cells, thin clients and monitors.

Unlike non-standard alternatives, PoH has the same safety mechanisms of IEEE802.3at-2009, with detection performed separately on data and spare pairs, ensuring interoperability. Microsemi’s front-end PD ICs are compliant with IEEE802.3af, IEEE802.3at and HDBaseT standards and power is provided using HDBaseT or other two-pair/four-pair configurations.

The devices feature an advanced classification block supporting two-event, three-event, four-event and six-event classifications. They integrate a 0,3 Ω isolating switch and inrush current limiter, as well as a DC/DC input cap for fast discharge, on-chip thermal protection and internal surge protection.
