Advantech develops multimedia web payphone

15 August 2001 Computer/Embedded Technology

Advantech's Panel PC Department recently participated in a 'network terminal' project with Chunghwa Telecom (CTCL), Taiwan's largest telecommunications carrier. 'Network terminal' is a pilot, first generation, public payphone system which features Internet web browsing, e-mail sending and receiving, paging, credit card acceptance and similar functions. Advantech is now cooperating with CTCL to expand the system to include additional features such as phone calling, Internet access, video-conferencing, fax and on-line shopping.

The Advantech multimedia web payphone system is integrated with computer, communications, mechanical and peripheral subsystems. The core of the computer system in the network terminal project based on Advantech's all-in-one industrial grade CPU boards. This makes the mechanical design of the system compact and enables it to operate continuously.

In order to have fast Internet access and videoconferencing capabilities, ISDN functions have been integrated into the communications system. Furthermore, the mechanical design of the multimedia web payphone is guaranteed to be vandalproof, while at the same time, aesthetically pleasing.

Various options were incorporated into the peripheral system such as CCD camera modules, touch screens, keypads and Euro/Master/Visa certified card readers to suit customer's individual requirements.

According to an International Telecommunication Union survey, approximately 10 to 15% of traditional public payphones will be replaced by multimedia web payphones over the next five years.
