In-vehicle PCs

20 March 2013 Computer/Embedded Technology

In-vehicle PCs offer many benefits for vehicle operators and users. Communication with and control of the movement of fleet vehicles can save companies and fleet operators thousands of Rands, as best routes can be determined and monitored, start/stop times and vehicle speeds can be logged and communicated in real-time, updates of schedules can be communicated to drivers to save time and mileage, and client orders and sales can be transmitted from vehicles to sales offices in real-time.

Security can also be enhanced as extra functions can be added, such as GPS tracking with geofencing functions to show if vehicles deviate from routes or areas, video camera inputs which can be recorded and transmitted to central locations, and vehicle electronics functions can be logged and transmitter using ODB II input from the vehicle electronics. Incidentally, we would not have so many images of the recent Russian meteor strike if so many of the Russian vehicles were not fitted with dashboard cams.

Rugged, compact, fanless industrial PCs for in-vehicle use provide all of the functions required to monitor, communicate and control fleet and other vehicles.

Centurion Microelectronics (CME) has a wide range of in-vehicle PCs, available from several manufacturers, providing Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G communication, GPS tracking, ODB II vehicle monitoring, solid state storage and more.
