Leakage current analyser for surge arrestors

26 June 2013 Test & Measurement

Test Instruments Africa has launched SCOPE’s SA 30i leakage current meter to the South African market. It is a state-of-the-art, on-line test system for residual life assessment of surge arrestors that measures and directly displays the values of resistive and total leakage current.

The instrument can be pre-loaded with the identity (asset number, make, year, serial number etc.) and tests conducted on the arrestor with the same ID are saved under its own folder. Sadata trend analysis software picks up this data and files it in a similar fashion on a PC. This analysis software enables the user to take a decision to repair or replace the arrestors, while considering safety limits.

The SA 30i is designed to work under the hostile electrostatic noise found in live EHV switch yards. A built-in temperature measurement facility enables calculation of temperature compensated leakage currents. Results are displayed on an LCD, printed on an optional thermal printer and up to 1000 test records can be stored (with date and time stamp) in memory.

A special low-noise clamp-on current transducer is used to read leakage current in the earthing conductor of the arrestor. The field probe is a non-contact, remote sensing device employed to take the reference signal from the HV line to the arrestor, for measurement of phase and system harmonics.

Measurement accuracy is ±5% and resolution is 1 mA for both resistive and total currents, over a range from 100 mA to 10 mA for total leakage current, 1 mA to 10 mA for resistive leakage current and 10 mA to 1 mA for field probe current.

The meter is powered by rechargeable SLA batteries and can perform testing for a day on a single charge. It features a standard built-in calibration source and self-calibration check facility. A USB port is used to transfer data to a PC and Windows-based data management software.
