As of June 2013, Test and Measurement Instruments (TMI) has been appointed as an official Fluke dealer by the South African agents, Comtest.

Speaking on the occasion of the appointment, Joe dos Santos, owner of TMI, reminisced about the company’s long involvement with Fluke products: “Our history of Fluke sales goes back to pre-1985, when I registered this Closed Corporation. Business had previously been conducted as a sole proprietorship under the name of Alectromix, and in a period of two years we had grown to be the biggest Fluke distributor in SA out of approximately 37 companies at the time,” he explained.

There were no cellphones, fax machines or Internet at that time, dos Santos pointed out. The standard methods of communication were fixed land lines, telex and snail mail post at 4 cents per letter. Cordless phones were deemed illegal and subject to confiscation and the total removal of the associated telephone line.

“This was at an exciting time when digital instruments were becoming the order of the day and replacing the age of their analog counterparts,” said dos Santos. “Safety of the user was becoming more important and instruments moved from the original Fluke 70 Series unfused 10 Amp multimeters to what they are today with high energy and expensive safety fuses being standard and essential in these devices. The highest standards for equipment must now be met when operating in certain areas such as many mines and other similar organisations.

“TMI have been suppliers of quality test equipment into southern Africa for almost 30 years and are proud to be associated with the great Fluke internationally accredited brand, and expect to be a great service to the industry,” he concluded.
