Thermopile with built-in thermistor

29 August 2001 Passive Components

New from Murata's Sensor Division is a clever adaptation of the conventional series-connected-thermocouples principle that provides quick and easy temperature measurements.

A combination of Murata's thin-film, micromachining and assembly technologies with its infrared sensor experience, has produced a new sensor. This is claimed to offer a highly responsive noncontact method of measuring human body temperatures and also has other uses in general temperature measurement.

Small and low profile, in a TO46 or TO39 can, each sensor comprises a rectangular infrared absorber to which more than 100 pairs of thermocouples are attached, all on a silicon membrane. In addition, the can contains a thermistor providing temperature at the cold junction.

Output voltages are 105 or 210 mVpp ±20% and time constants of 35 or 60 ms are available, depending on the device selected. The temperature coefficient of the output voltage is less than -0,3%/K and resistance at 25°C is 50 kOhm ±3% and BETA at 25 to 50°C is 4150K±1%.

Murata's IRTS5051TC01 is supplied in boxes of 100 pieces with conductive foam protection.
