Microchip has launched a new six-member family of temperature sensor ICs called the EMC118X. This is said to be the world’s first family of temperature sensors with 1,8 V SMBus and I²C communication, which is required for interfacing to the latest generation of smartphone, tablets and PC chipsets. This integrated, low-voltage I/O support reduces cost and board space because there is no external voltage level shifter.
The devices use an advanced sample-frequency-hopping filter, which enables accurate readings using temperature monitoring traces of up to 20 cm in noisy environments. The EMC118X family serves a broad range of applications in the mobile, commercial and embedded computing markets by combining the above features with options for dual, triple and quad temperature monitoring, in addition to hardwired system shutdown settings that cannot be overridden by software.
Microchip has also introduced the EMC1182 Evaluation Board (ADM00516) to enable development with these new temperature sensors. The EMC1182 is offered in 8-pin DFN and TDFN packages; the EMC1183, EMC1184, EMC1187 and EMC1188 are all available in a 10-pin DFN package; whilst the EMC1186 is offered in an 8-pin TDFN package.
