RGB light sensor IC

2 April 2014 Opto-Electronics

Intersil unveiled the ISL29125 digital light sensor, a highly accurate, low-power red, green and blue (RGB) sensor that optimises the display resolution and colour quality of mobile devices and TVs in all lighting environments.

The 1,65 x 1,65 x 0,75 mm chip communicates directly with a device’s core processor to enable the automatic adjustment of display brightness based on changing light conditions, providing a more crisp and colour consistent experience while extending battery life.

With integrated, robust on-chip IR (infrared) filtering technology and angular response of a minimum of ±35% field of view at 50% light intensity, the ISL29125 eliminates the fluctuations commonly experienced when moving between different light conditions. It works directly with the device’s core processor to continuously adjust the lux range and ensure that the display maintains consistent perceived colour and the ideal brightness level based on the current lighting environment.

The sensor works similarly when integrated into a TV display, effectively adjusting the brightness and colour consistency of the display as the lighting conditions in a room change. Specifically, in organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display TV applications, it can be used to adjust the blue organic material ageing profile to maintain consistent contrast and brightness throughout the life of the display.

The ISL29125 features a standard I²C nterface and an operating voltage range of 2,25 V to 3,63 V. It offers a wide dynamic range of 5,7 millilux to 10 kilolux detection capabilities, which allows the display brightness to adjust in low- to high-lit environments, preventing unnecessary power consumption to prolong battery life.

A lux range select feature enables designers to program the lux range for optimised counts/lux based on the device’s requirements. In power-down mode, the sensor consumes less than 0,5 μA of current and in active mode it runs at approximately 85 μA.

The ISL29125 is suitable for many other applications in which the highest level of colour temperature measurement accuracy is required, including industrial colour printers, thermostat displays and water quality testing devices.
