USAASA finds itself in SIU’s crosshairs
23 April 2014
News
President Jacob Zuma has commanded the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to launch an investigation into the affairs of the Universal Service and Access Agency of South Africa (USAASA) – the body charged with channelling telecommunications licensing revenues to areas of the country in need of ICT infrastructure development.
The president’s proclamation instructs the SIU to probe the agency for any evidence of corruption, maladministration, improper or unlawful conduct by its employees, unlawful appropriation or expenditure of public or State money or property, and intentional or negligent loss of public money or damage to public property.
The investigation is to focus on the period after 1 June 2009, but Zuma has granted the SIU the right to go further back into the agency’s past affairs if deemed necessary for its investigation.
