Microcomputer compensated crystal oscillator

4 June 2014 Analogue, Mixed Signal, LSI

IQD’s new IQMT-100 micro-computer compensated crystal oscillator (MCXO) offers OCXO performance in a standard clock oscillator sized package.

Its design enables a frequency stability of ±50 ppb (parts per billion) over the full industrial operating temperature range of -40°C to 85°C whilst maintaining typical short term stability of 2E-10/s.

The component is housed in an industry standard sized ceramic package measuring 7 x 5 mm, with both 8- and 10-pad options available over a frequency range from 10 to 50 MHz.

Output compatibility can be specified as either clipped sine or HCMOS with 15 pF load along with 3,0, 3,3 and 5,0 V supply voltages. A voltage control option is available to control the frequency pulling to compensate for crystal ageing and varying circuit conditions with choices of either ±5 to ±10 ppm or ±10 to ±15 ppm.

Ageing per day is 20 ppb, although 10 ppb can be offered for some specification combinations. Similarly, standard ageing over one year is 1 ppm although 0,5 ppm can be offered for certain frequencies. Typical phase noise performance is -145 dBC/Hz @ 100 kHz.

Designed to be used in a wide range of applications such as femto, pico and micro base-stations, digital switching, GPS/GNSS, microwave backhaul, digital video broadcast, satellite up-converters and environmental monitoring equipment, the device lends itself to portable use since it consumes less than 15 mA of current. It is ideal for use where an OCXO cannot be used due to size and power consumption restrictions, and where a tight frequency stability is required which a TCVCXO cannot achieve.
