Compact cable connectors for lighting

17 September 2014 Interconnection

With its MaxiBridge (2,54 mm pitch) and MiniBridge (1,27 mm pitch) cable connector families, ERNI Electronics is meeting the demands for compactness as well as the electrically and mechanically sophisticated designs typical of modern lighting technology.

MaxiBridge connectors enable efficient and space-saving connections to be realised between printed circuit boards (PCB) and peripheral functional units such as lamps, displays, panels, LEDs, switches and sensors. The system is versatile thanks to the availability of straight and angled male and female connectors with 180° cable outlet. A robust interlocking system ensures a high level of reliability even under vibration.

The MaxiBridge connectors are now also available with colourless (white) insulating bodies, which prevent shadowing in lighting applications. They can be supplied in 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 and 20 pins, with SMT terminals for male models and crimp contacts for female variants. Current carrying capacity is specified up to 12 A per contact, each of which can accommodate AWG 18, 20, 22, 24 and 26 stranded conductors. Mismating is prevented by four different colour codes, depending on pin count.

The single-row MiniBridge connectors are predestined for a diverse range of lighting applications where space is often restricted. Examples include LCD/TFT/LED displays, handheld devices and control panel elements, in addition to automotive electronics like LED front and rear lights, infrared distance sensors, head-up displays and switch elements.

With their compact design and current carrying capacity up to 8 A per contact, MiniBridge components are often wired but can also be designed as modular PCB plug-in connectors. Assembled connectors can accommodate ribbon cables as well as discrete wires and facilitate particularly simple, flexible and cost-efficient installation. MiniBridge connectors are also available with colourless insulating bodies.

Available with 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 pins, MiniBridge male connectors have SMT terminals, whereas the female connectors have IDC terminals. The latter are available with two types of interlocking for normal or high vibration/shock loads. The MiniBridge system can be supplied in straight or angled versions.

ERNI Electronics offers the MaxiBridge and MiniBridge cable connectors fully assembled. To support rapid delivery, cables are available from stock in PVC, high temperature (TPE-ET) and halogen-free versions.
