Poke-in contacts ideal for lighting

17 September 2014 Interconnection

A new range of low-profile, releasable poke-in wire connectors is available from TE Connectivity, that are surface mountable onto a printed circuit board (PCB) while offering solderless contact points for AWG #18, #20 and #22 solid and stranded wires.

They are best used in LED lighting controls, general illumination LED modules for fixtures, interconnecting strings of PCB-based LED light modules, and various non-lighting applications that require connecting wire leads to printed circuit boards. Rounded corners minimise light obstruction and resultant shadowing.

Their release mechanism allows for the multiple wire insertions often required for component testing, final assembly and field/factory service. Although the release mechanism is easily activated with a ballpoint pen or small screwdriver tip, it is recessed below the top side of the connector to prevent inadvertent activation or breakage during wire insertion.

The new connectors are available in 1, 2 and 3 positions with current ratings of 9 A on AWG #18 wire (5 A on AWG #20 – #22 wires), and can withstand voltages up to 600 V a.c./d.c. The contacts are constructed using a high-conductivity copper alloy with tin over nickel plating.

The low-profile design has a flat top surface that allows for SMT vacuum pickup. The connectors are available in tape and reel packaging for high-speed SMT and through-hole processing. They have redundant SMT pads that prevent peeling and are side-by-side stackable with pads on 4 mm centres.

The connectors operate at temperatures between -40°C and 130°C, and feature RoHS compliant, UL 94 V0 rated high temperature resistant thermoplastic material.
