Mini cable-to-board interconnects

19 November 2014 Interconnection

A new interconnect range from 3M features miniature and robust, 1,27 mm pitch ribbon cable to printed circuit board (PCB) parts for high connection density.

The ribbon cable wire-mount socket assembly, 1,27 x 1,27 mm, 451 series incorporates 3M’s insulation displacement contact (IDC) technology in the connector, helping maintain secure connections and high signal integrity. The IDC connector’s mass termination capability allows the termination of 30 lines in a single cycle, reducing the need for expensive automated termination equipment and allowing manual cable assembly.

Available friction-latch configurations and an optional strain-relief accessory can further increase connection reliability. An optional, unique header ejector latch mechanism provides positive latch and ejection capability with minimal extra size.

The shrouded board-mount header, 1,27 x 1,27 mm, 452 series is available in a variety of configurations. Tape-and-reel packaging for the SMT version of the header is available for automated placement applications, and PCB standoffs help enable pin-in-paste processing capability.

Both series can help design engineers of high-performance electronic systems for communications, military/aerospace, industrial production, data centre and high-performance computing. The socket and header mate together connecting 0,635 mm pitch ribbon cables to PCBs. A variety of 0,635 mm pitch ribbon cables are also available, forming a complete, end-to-end system of header, socket and cable.
