Sentech CEO departs after overseeing DTT upgrade

Sentech, the state-owned enterprise responsible for signal broadcasts within South Africa’s borders, is searching for a new CEO following the resignation of Dr Setumo Mohapi. The announcement of his decision to take the helm at the State IT Agency (SITA) spelled the end of his four-year tenure.

Mohapi leaves Sentech on something of a high note in the drawn out programme to roll out digital terrestrial television (DTT) broadcasting, following shortly after the signal distributor flicked the switch turning on its national DTT transmitter network.
In total, 178 transmitter stations across the country have been upgraded, bringing DTT signals to 84,23% of the population through geographic coverage of 57,99%. A direct-to-home satellite system, which is already in place, will service those outside of DTT access areas. The first of the transmitters based on the DVB-T2 standard adopted by the erstwhile Department of Communications went live in 2011, and all that remains now to complete the upgrade is a process of testing and stabilisation to ensure the network’s long-term operation.

Chief financial officer, Ms Rudzani Rasikhinya, has been appointed by Sentech’s board as acting CEO until a decision is made on Mohapi’s permanent successor.
