Desktop PCB printer in development

Thanks to enthusiastic backing from Kickstarter funders, a printer will soon see the light of day that can create prototype printed circuit boards (PCB) while being conveniently sized to fit comfortably on a desktop or workbench. Developed by Canadian startup Voltera, its Kickstarter campaign broke through its $70 000 goal within 30 days, and currently stands at just over $500 000 pledged.
Working from standard Gerber files, the Voltera V-One accepts blank FR4 boards, onto which it lays a conductive ink to create the traces and an insulating ink as a mask between layers. Its appeal is boosted by the additional capability to assist in populating small board quantities by dispensing solder paste and reflow soldering. Two-layer boards will also be possible, due to the printer’s design software being able to detect trace intersections and lay down an insulating mask at points of overlap.
Kickstarter backers will be the first to get their hands on a V-One during the course of this year, while regular customers will have to wait until the estimated January 2016 release window.
