Freescale Semiconductor announced the new Kinetis K8x multi-application microcontroller (MCU) family, which delivers the highest levels of integrated security available on an ARM Cortex-M class platform. Instead of requiring a separate security co-processor to perform cryptographic functions and another for physical tamper protection, these devices perform all these functions on-chip. Being the industry’s first MCU with on-the-fly decryption for external serial NOR Flash memory, the K8x supports execution from encrypted external memories, allowing secure scalability. Design flexibility is supported with FlexIO peripherals and multiple serial, parallel or custom interfaces can be emulated using software drivers.
