DC-DC converters with extended operating temperatures

12 August 2015 Power Electronics / Power Management

Calex announced the addition of the -T option on its 500 W MXW and 360 W MTW series, providing for extended temperature operation of the converters from -55°C to +105°C including cold start at -55°C. This option makes both series ideal for military/aerospace and hi-rel applications requiring extended temperature operation.

The devices feature an ultra-wide 9 - 36 V DC input range accommodating a variety of power sources from 12 V to 24 V to 28 V nominal. Output voltages available for both series are 12, 15, 24 and 28 V d.c. and all models are isolated input to output. Each series offers efficiency up to 95,7% and high power density in a package size of 61 x 63,5 x 13,2 mm. They operate at a fixed frequency and follow conservative derating guidelines.

All models feature on/off control with a low idle current of 2 mA, and a trim range of ±10%. Performance figures include switching frequency of 200 kHz; output voltage setpoint accuracy of ±1,5%; turn-on overshoot of 0; temperature coefficient of 0,015%/ºC typical; output noise of 1% of Vout peak to peak; operation down to no-load condition; and line and load regulation of 0,15% maximum.

The MTBF for both these series is 5,4 million hours, and they are backed by a five-year warranty. They also feature thermal shutdown, over-voltage, over-current and short circuit protection, all with auto-restart, as well as a monotonic startup into pre biased loads.
