Power supply customisation provides configuration flexibility

24 October 2001 Power Electronics / Power Management

Vicor's VIPAC family of power solutions offers the user a new concept in power supply customisation offering configuration flexibility, high power density, high reliability, and fast time-to-market.

Its modular construction combines pre-assembled and tested front-ends with one or more of Vicor's second-generation DC-DC converters on a choice of platforms.

The modular front ends may be specified for operation from 48 V d.c. or 115/230 V a.c. and incorporate Vicor's FIAM or FARM modules to provide transient protection, EMI filtering, autoranging and bridge rectification. A microprocessor-controlled interface provides programmable output sequencing, serial number readback, bus OK, bus voltage monitoring, master enable and realtime control of power-up and power-down sequencing.

The DC-DC converters - in industry standard full, half, and quarter brick packages - provide up to three independently regulated outputs of 1,8 to 48 V at power levels up to 900 W. An output trimming range of 10 to 110% - down to as low as 500 mV - provides additional flexibility. Other special features include output sequencing, overvoltage protection on all outputs, and no minimum load requirement.

For AC input systems, the partitioned architecture of VIPAC permits locating hold-up capacitors remotely, providing a variety of packaging and placement options. Reliability is enhanced by thermally decoupling the capacitors from the converters and chassis. Multiple mechanical platforms with profiles as low as 19 mm simplifies the integration of a VIPAC power supply in a variety of systems.
