Johann Kok of test and measurement supplier, K Measure, and inventor of the SeeBox, won first prize in the PwC Pitching Den competition for startups at the SA Innovation Summit that took place in Cape Town from 27 to 29 August.
The victory brought a prize of R25 000 which will be reinvested into the further development of the invention. SeeBox also won the category for Best Social Invention, and the Best Design category, with another R30 000 in prizes.
The Scientific Engineering Education Box (SeeBox) seeks to address the worldwide shortage of engineers by introducing learners to electronics at a young age. Africa lags behind in the training of engineers and the SeeBox offers a technological solution to this. SeeBox is a game console that teaches electronic principles, problem solving and abstract thinking to learners, tertiary students and even children at home without needing an electronics teacher.
Learners watch entertaining animated videos to learn about the concepts of electronics. They then use that knowledge to progress through an educational game. Each level is a practical electronic experiment using real electronic components and experiment boards, called Playboards.
The system measures the outcome of the experiment and, based on what the learner achieves, they can proceed to the next level. The user interface works like other tablet apps in a way familiar to users of smartphones. Importantly, SeeBox also tracks the abilities and progress of the learner over time.
SeeBox is also a sophisticated test instrument for professional electronic engineers to use. It consists of an oscilloscope, logic analyser, spectrum analyser, waveform generator and power supply. Add-on modules can expand its uses to that of a multimeter, power data logger and more.
An Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign (http://igg.me/at/seebox) is currently active for the SeeBox, which gives backers the chance to pre-order a unit at a 40% discount, or co-sponsor one for any school they nominate. The SeeBox is expected to begin shipping in March 2016.
