Linear Technology's LTC1960, a battery charger and selector with SPI interface and power crisis management for dual battery systems, can replace existing multiple-IC offerings. The IC delivers 10% longer run time, 50% faster charge time and less than 10 ms response time to power interruption compared to existing solutions claims the manufacturer. Serial SPI interface simplifies communication with external microcontrollers. It features PowerPath architecture, which allows simultaneous charging or discharging of both batteries without any firmware interaction. It automatically switches between power sources in less than 10 ms to prevent power interruption upon battery or wall adapter removal. This synchronous buck battery charger delivers 95% efficiency with only 0,5 V dropout voltage and prevents audible noise in all operating modes. It is housed in narrow 36-lead shrink SO package.
