CodeBug, a miniature computer designed with simple wearable electronics projects in mind, provides an entry-level introduction to coding, physical computing and electronics. Initially funded through Kickstarter, CodeBug has since secured a route for global distribution through an agreement with Element 14 (Farnell).
With dimensions of 39 x 47 mm and low power requirements, the device is finding typical application amongst hobbyists and beginners in the likes of scrolling message displays for Twitter and Facebook notifications, inter-active greetings cards, key rings, board games, handheld digital games, and as a starting point for Internet of Things (IoT) devices. It serves as a versatile input/output interface to connect lights, switches, sensors and motors, and can add touch sensitive inputs to a computer.
The board can be powered from a 3 V coin cell or 5 V from the micro USB port (which is also used for programming). Onboard interfaces include a 5-by-5 grid of red LEDs for user feedback, 2 buttons and an expansion header for I2C, SPI and UART. CodeBug can also be plugged onto a Raspberry Pi as a GPIO add-on.
