Circuit design competition open to students

23 March 2016 News

Based in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Park in Northern England, Labcenter Electronics has been building on the Proteus Design Suite software for over 25 years. This year it will be adding an entirely new module to the Suite, titled ‘Proteus Visual Designer’.

The existing Schematic Capture, Simulation and PCB Design package will be expanded with the new Visual Designer flowchart-based-programming module, which aims to make it easier than ever for students and hobbyists to get started with building their own electronics projects.

Visual Designer abstracts as much as possible of the underlying complexity of electronics away from the user, exposing only simple methods such as, for example, forwards and backwards for a motor (with speed setting adjustable). Functional blocks are simply dragged-and-dropped into the flowchart, and linked together to form a complete project, which can also be simulated in the Proteus environment with no need for physical hardware (although the project can also be downloaded to physical hardware at the click of a button). Visual Designer is currently targeted at Arduino Uno, with more platforms such as Intel Galileo on the development roadmap.

To promote this new tool, Labcenter is running a worldwide student competition, where university and high school students are challenged to come up with the most innovative Visual Designer project. The winning student from each institution (as judged by their lecturer/educator) will receive a free professional copy of Visual Designer, and be entered into the worldwide competition for cash prizes of up to $1000 (roughly R15 000).
