Hiconnex-manufactured connectors a boon for Mil/Aero sector

15 June 2016 Interconnection

When choosing the best connector for the job, the global military and aerospace (Mil/Aero) electronics sector commonly selects those that conform to one of the two most popular standards: MIL-D38999 and MIL-C26482. South Africa is no different, but owing to the relatively small size of the market here, the country often gets the short end of the stick when connector manufacturers/distributors control their regional allotments proportionately.

Needless to say, this presents a problem when local developers and manufacturers of military electronic equipment are on tight schedules and can’t afford extended lead times. To help overcome this obstacle, Hiconnex went to the effort of establishing a facility that can cut lead times from as long as 18 weeks, down to just 3 days.

Located in Centurion – conveniently close to SA’s main hub of military development – the plant is QPL (Qualified Product Listing) certified to manufacture MIL-D38999 Series 3 and MIL-C26482 Series 2 connectors as a value added distributor for Souriau (headquartered in France). In fact, it is the only facility in the country with such a licence, and its quality and standards are periodically audited by Souriau and the Defence Supply Centre, Columbus (DSCC).

Serving applications in civil and military aerospace, ground military, industrial, marine and offshore markets, the manufacturing line employs three qualified lab operators. The expertise built up over time, and the demand for its connectors, have allowed Hiconnex to evolve its processes from hand printing to inkjet, and enables it to offer its customers more customised solutions than ever.

With roughly 80% of these connectors currently going into the Mil/Aero sector, the company is actively exploring ways to boost its market share in high-end industrial and railway markets, as well as considering extending its capabilities to more connector types.
