Quarter-brick DC/DC converters set new power density standard

21 November 2001 Electronics Technology

Artesyn Technologies' new high-efficiency quarter-brick DC/DC converter modules produce up to 83 W of output power. Measuring 5,79 x 3,68 x 1,27 cm, the EXQ125 series converters have a power density of more than 3 W/cm3, a figure said to set a new standard for the industry. The converters are designed specifically to meet the growing demand for low-voltage, high current sources for powering latest-generation semiconductor technology, and are initially available with 3,3 V, 2,5 V or 1,8 V outputs. All three models are capable of producing exceptionally high current output levels; the 2,5 V and 1,8 V units can deliver up to 30 A, and the 3,3 V unit can deliver up to 25 A. The converters feature a wide input voltage range of 33 V to 75 V and are particularly suitable for systems employing a 48 V distributed power architecture, including any that operate from a -48 V central office battery plant.

Artesyn's EXQ125 series DC/DC converters use a technique known as synchronous rectification to achieve extremely high conversion efficiencies. They have a 1500 V d.c. isolation rating and carry a full set of international safety approvals.
