GSM cellular engines in terminal or module version

21 November 2001 Electronics Technology

At CeBIT 2001, Siemens launched the TC35 GSM module and TC35 GSM terminal. The TC35 is the smallest GSM module currently available on the market, according to the company. This universally usable communication module supports both the GSM 900 and the GSM 1800 networks and offers an ideal base for a variety of applications in telemetry, telematics, multimedia, telephony and mobile computing.

The Dual Band TC35 Module addresses manufacturers of telematic solutions and fleet management systems, among others. Siemens also sees application opportunities for measurement data transfer, for example from electric meters or environmental measuring stations, and in remote monitoring, from photocopiers to car washes. The TC35 can be used in many different devices. For example, it can be integrated into vending machines for remote diagnostics and supply optimisation as well as cashless payment transactions.

The TC35 terminal, is the plug-and-play version of the TC35. The TC35 terminal can be integrated more simply via standard interfaces.

The module has been optimised for efficient power consumption (80% less in standby mode than the predecessor module) and is smaller than a matchbox (54,5 x 36 x 6,85 mm) - the terminal measures 65 x 74 x 33 mm. The TC35 is controlled via AT commands. With robust construction it can be used at temperatures from -20°C to +55°C. Automatic system shutdown occurs at +70°C. Optimal reception sensitivity and a transmission power of 2 W in the GSM900 network and 1 W in the GSM1800 network, assure good coverage with high connection quality. In addition to voice transmission, the TC35 offers complete fax, SMS, cell broadcast, and data capabilities.
