System replaces manual tooling to speed screenprint changeovers

21 November 2001 Electronics Technology

DEK's FormFlex replaces programmable and manual tooling with a pin array that automatically conforms to the board underside. The result, it says, is shorter set-up time and enhanced support, especially for high density, double-sided assemblies.

The unique FormFlex design provides full support in x, y and z planes with no programming necessary. Z-plane support includes contact with component packaging and I/O as well as the board surface. It also supports the stencil, which is known to improve print quality and consistency. Each tooling pin in the array contacts with the underside of the assembly, distributing screen printing forces equally across a large number of support points. Thus set-up is no longer dependent on the ability to locate unpopulated areas of the board, and eliminating lengthy programming procedures or manual tooling placement minimises set-up time and guarantees sufficient support for the assembly during screen printing.

As a conforming tooling system, FormFlex is mechanically straightforward and does not feature sophisticated electronics or control software. It is easy for operators to learn to use, and maintenance requirements are low.
