Hunt Engineering, based in the UK, has been running an 'Innovation Competition'. Judging on this was completed and the company reported that the entries were all of exceptionally good quality. There were four finalists:
A: Flywheel energy storage system for hybrid electric transit bus. In this system, the DSPs were used to manage the motors and generators attached to a flywheel, plus its gyroscopic mount. This will be used in next-generation electric transport systems.
B: DVB test system. This allows simulation of DVB transmissions with multipath to aid the development of multipath-immune DVB receivers. It should result in greatly enhanced digital TV receiver designs. Mainly academic use.
C: Process monitoring by acoustic emission. This 'listens' to the sounds that manufacturing equipment is making - spray guns, laser welding systems and so forth. By analysing the sound, it can detect any deviation from the machine's correct operation; for a spray gun this could be caused by a blocked jet, low air pressure or a bad air mix. This can then be used to control the machine; systems like this could be used in car manufacturing.
D: Testing turbine engines. This uses arrays of sensors to analyse each blade on a turbine, typically in-flight on an aircraft. This level of monitoring provides advanced warning of failure to the pilot or operator, allowing them to shut down the engine before blade failure occurs. This may see application in both commercial and military aircraft.
Said Jaap Willemse of Electronic Products Design, South African VAR for Hunt Engineering: "Each entry was of an excellent standard and in the end, the judges went for Entry C, as it showed the highest level of innovation. However, the diversity shows what can be done with our systems!"
The winner received the HEPC8 system from Hunt Engineering, with two TMS320C6201 processors and the HEGD2 multichannel ADC - along with all software and a personal organiser.
Apart from the winner, there were three runners-up who each received a discount voucher and toolset. Ten other finalists each received a discount voucher.
