Poynting launches 5-in-1 antenna at Innotrans

Poynting Antennas launched its new 5-in-1 antenna at the Innotrans Trade Fair in Germany on 20 September 2016. The antenna, going by the commercial name MIMO-1, is a small but powerful antenna that offers one GPS, two GSM and two dual band Wi-Fi antennas in a single compact enclosure. It has been tested in a range of environments and applications and offers a cost-effective and future-proof solution for in-vehicle networking.

“The new Poynting 5-in-1 antenna covers a wide range of existing and expected frequencies in the Wi-Fi, GPS, 2G, 3G and 4G LTE bands, making it an ideal enabler to the range of vehicle telematics and in-vehicle connectivity technologies and for the Internet of Things (IoT) that are being launched in the market,” says Dr André Fourie, chairman and product specialist at Poynting Antennas.

According to Fourie, Internet connectivity in mobile settings, such as on public transport systems or in medical and emergency vehicles, has moved from a novelty to a mission critical requirement. This is due in part to the rapid increase in connected devices in these vehicles, but it’s also driven by consumer demand. “In a world where traditional tethers to the central office have all but vanished, enterprises that operate vehicle fleets require constant and dependable mobile Internet connectivity to keep up,” he says.

Successfully combining five distinct antennas in a very small and robust enclosure is testimony to the engineering expertise of the specialists at Poynting Antennas. The antenna has two multiple input, multiple output (MIMO) antennas covering the entire 2G, 3G and 4G LTE frequency ranges, a GPS antenna and two Wi-Fi antennas, covering the 2,4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies, in a ruggedised enclosure that is slightly larger than a person’s hand.

“Our research and development team drew on their extensive experience in creating compact, cross-polarised antennas in the design of the 5-in-1 antenna,” says Michael Howard, CEO of Poynting Antennas. Howard explains that the team successfully decoupled the two cross-polarised LTE antennas in the 5-in-1 antenna, enabling greater gain and subsequent high data speeds and a reliable connection. “We have also incorporated our proprietary wideband technology, which allows the antenna to be used in a range of other applications and frequencies,” says Howard.

The new 5-in-1 antenna is housed in a ruggedised enclosure that has been tested to withstand harsh climatic conditions and a severe variance in temperatures, as is often present in vehicles. The antenna has also proved itself able to withstand moisture ingress and the vibrations from being mounted on vehicles.

“In designing the antenna components and its enclosure, we referenced other unique or mass market antennas that we have designed and tested. These include the new OMNI 291 marine and coastal antenna that we supplied to the German Olympic Sailing team for their Rio 2016 campaign, and the highly specialised and compact high gain antenna that has been fitted to the Bloodhound supersonic car and which will live stream its record-breaking attempt in the near future,” says Fourie.
