A classical way of regulating fine voltage control as required in most of power supply unit applications is to use a TL1431 shunt voltage reference. According to STMicroelectronics this method obtains the desired precision by trimming an adjustable resistor for its programmation process. The typical voltage precision of this device is 2% which is not accurate enough for some applications and which can necessitate the intervention of an operator.
The company has thus developed an enhanced version of the well known adjustable voltage reference, the TL1431. This device offers a higher precision of 0,4% (standard) and 0,25% for the A version.
The device is a programmable shunt voltage reference with guaranteed temperature stability over the entire temperature range of operation (-40 to +105°C). The output voltage may be set to any value between 2,5 V and 36 V with two external resistors.
The TLC1031 operates with a wide current range from 1 to 100 mA. The device includes a highly stable reference voltage source with a maximum deviation for the nominal: 2,5 V to 20 mV (3 mV typical) across the entire temperature range for the TL1431C (commercial range) and 30 mV (7 mV typical) for the TL1431I (industrial temperature range).
These devices can be used in a variety of applications including power supplies, power adapters and battery chargers.
