Donations help train electrical engineering students in Tembisa

26 Jan 2000 News

Energy Measurements (EML), winner of the President's Merit Award for social upliftment, black empowerment and community development, has donated electrical equipment to Lazarus Technical College in Tembisa to help trainee electrical engineers further their studies.

EML made an initial donation to the College in the last quarter 1998, valued in excess of R35 000. Over the last year the company has made several donations of equipment which goes directly into the electronic centre where students utilise the equipment in repair and construction projects.

On a recent site visit, Dave Tarr, EML's Customer Services Manager said, "The college is benefiting dramatically from the donations as the electronics centre now has sufficient equipment and componentry to teach the students what they need to know to qualify for university courses.

"Through periodic visits to the college we assess the students' needs. EML will continue supplying equipment but is also looking to donate components directly from the factory. A further aspect of our sponsorship involves inviting the students on an excursion to the Cashpower2000 factory in Isando. This exposes them to a working environment where their skills would be put to work," concluded Tarr.

Mr Mudau, Head of the Engineering Department at the Lazarus Technical College said, "These donations have given the students a sense of responsibility. They use the equipment with care as they realise how fortunate they are to have the equipment available."

EML is a joint venture company of Siemens and Spescom.
