When the German tourist ferry company, Moehneseeschifffahrt, wanted to impress its guests with reliable internet and Wi-Fi calling connectivity during tours in the greater lake districts in Germany, an antenna from South African specialist Poynting Antennas was chosen for the project.
Modern tourists demand Wi-Fi internet services to share their experiences on social media and to remain connected with the outside world. Providing tourists with this service is becoming an expectation which enhances their experience and customer satisfaction. It is, as always, also for security and safety reasons that constant communication is vital.
The local distributor of Poynting Antennas in Germany, IME mobile solutions GmbH, provided a solution using a cellular/LTE and Wi-Fi router connected to two OMNI-291 and one WLAN-61 antenna. Before the implementation of this system, 0 to 1 bar cellular reception was experienced, but afterwards, 4 to 5 bars were reported. The passengers previously had little or no data throughput before, but now have 1,55 Mbps to 10,83 Mbps depending on where in the greater lake district they were.
According to Moehneseeschifffarht, telephony over a stable Wi-Fi connection is now fully possible and it also plans to use this medium for advertisements onboard. The company says it can now link its passengers to its website with real-time information for guests, including cruise navigation and course information as well as other interesting information for the passengers.
