Power Integrations' monolithic switcher IC delivers 290 W of output power. The TOP250, the newest power device in the company's TOPSwitch-GX family, is available in through-hole and surface mount package options, including the industry standard TO-220 (TOP250Y), a low-profile TO-262 (TOP250F) and a surface mountable TO-263 (TOP250R-TL), also known as D2PAK. The TOP250 delivers the same power supply design benefits of reduced size, high standby efficiency and lower system cost offered by the initial products in the TOPSwitch-GX family. A versatile feature set and uniform simplicity of design extends across the entire family, now enabling power supply designers to create cost-effective solutions for any application up to 290 W.
The initial TOPSwitch-GX family, introduced in late 2000, is a monolithic high-voltage IC family that cost-effectively integrates a high-voltage power MOSFET, PWM control, fault protection, and other control circuitry onto a single CMOS chip. Built-in features include soft-start for minimum overshoot and lower component stresses at start-up, frequency jittering for low EMI, under-voltage protection and over-voltage shutdown, programmable current limit, and the company's energy-saving EcoSmart technology. EcoSmart technology greatly reduces energy consumption, especially in standby and 'no load' conditions, according to the manufacturer.
Other applications addressed by the TOP250 include small servers, digital TVs and audio amplifiers.
