High-speed serial data connector family

13 March 2002 Interconnection

The High Speed Serial Data Connector 2 (HSSDC2) product family from Molex can help improve electrical performance and minimise space usage for leading-edge protocols, including fibre channel, InfiniBand and gigabit Ethernet. Applications include servers, switches, computers, storage devices and internetworking equipment.

The HSSDC2 product family includes a board-mount receptacle, an adapter receptacle, the Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) module and cable assemblies. The system complements the latest SFP products. The connector operates at 2,5 Gbps and is scalable to 5,0 Gbps for next generation designs.

Designed for 1,57 mm and 2,36 mm printed circuit boards, the system's right-angle receptacle offers a positive locking interface to prevent accidental disengagement and 94 V-0 high temperature plastic for reflow flexibility. The SMT lead design allows 0,16 mm tail-to-tail coplanarity, facilitating standard soldering techniques. Six chassis ground locations, six PCB ground retention contacts and four plug-to-receptacle grounding points minimise EMI/RFI. A keying feature allows polarisation and reduces mismating. The HSSDC2 connector meets both 100 Ohm or 150 Ohm system requirements.

Fibre Channel cable assemblies running at 2,125 Gbps are engineered to 150 Ohm matched impedance and are compliant to 20 meters. The InfiniBand version tops 2,25 Gbps with 100 Ohm matched impedance and is protocol compliant to 17 meters. Assemblies use a high-speed cable die-cast plug with an internal impedance-controlled high speed PCB and rugged positive latching system. Molex also offers a variety of hot-pluggable copper SFP modules serving InfiniBand and fibre channel applications.

HSSDC2 has been specified as the 1x interface for next generation InfiniBand I/O applications. This specification is based on the protocol's stringent electrical requirements including insertion loss, cross-talk, pair-to-pair skew and differential impedance. The connector is also designated as the next revision of the NCIT's T11 fibre channel physical layer specification.
