Configurable modular transfer for robot assembly cells
29 July 2019
Manufacturing / Production Technology, Hardware & Services
The LCM100 linear conveyor module, a new solution for robotic assembly by Yamaha’s Factory Automation (FA) Section, enables cleaner, quieter and more flexible workpiece transport. By simplifying production startup, reducing cycle times, and increasing accuracy, the modules boost productivity and yield, while also cutting noise, increasing reliability, and reducing the size of robot assembly cells.
Unlike conventional belt and roller conveyors, each LCM100 module contains an independently controlled, high-speed linear motor that enables bidirectional movement and programmable speed up to
3000 mm/second. Production lines can be configured optimally, not dependent on the longest process cycle time, and utilise inline equipment more efficiently to save space and capital expenditure. Further benefits of the linear drives include low friction and lag-free acceleration and deceleration.
The robust and stable sliders, combined with positioning accuracy better than ±0,015 mm, allow assembly tasks to be performed directly on the module. With no need to de-palletise and move workpieces from a conventional conveyor to a worktable, tact time can be faster and assembly cells smaller and more cost-effective. Without physical microswitches or end stops, slider stop positions can be quickly and easily reprogrammed in software.
In addition, LCM100 modules are designed for easy interchangeability and reconfiguration, enabling assembly cells to be setup quickly and cost-effectively, especially for short production runs. Modules can also be removed or replaced easily to minimise downtime, and reused in other assembly cells to maximise utilisation.
The modules are available in standard 480 mm and 640 mm lengths and carry a 15 kg maximum payload. A 400 mm circulation module is also available.

Editor's Choice Manufacturing / Production Technology, Hardware & Services
Dross formation is an inevitable consequence of wave soldering. It occurs when molten solder comes into contact with oxygen, forming metal oxides that float on the surface of the solder bath. Over time, this oxidation byproduct accumulates and must be removed to maintain solder quality and process consistency.
