Fixed off-time flyback switching regulator

The STR-G6551 from Allegro MicroSystems is a fixed off-time switching regulator integrated circuit capable of handling up to 60 W. The 5-pin overmoulded TO-220 packaged device uses a hybrid construction incorporating an avalanche rated power MOSFET and a fixed-frequency mixed-mode control IC. The power MOSFET is rated at 700 V.

The control IC operates at 100 kHz, and has a built-in oscillator, undervoltage lockout, pulse-by-pulse current-limiting, programmable overcurrent protection, latched overvoltage protection, timer latched overload protection, and latched thermal shutdown.

A digitally controlled built-in soft-start facility limits the switch current at start-up without the need for additional external components. The fixed 16 µs off-time at start-up limits dissipation in the power switch. Maximum frequency of operation is 63 kHz. Noise filtering is by means of a switched-attenuation filter technique that also enhances stability at light load.

The manufacturer says the device offers a robust, economical, low-risk solution for off-line switch-mode power supplies, particularly where management of electromagnetic interference at the source is a significant element of the system design.
