Shielded surface mount inductors rated to 40 A

10 April 2002 Passive Components

Responding to demands for higher current devices compatible with today's powerful microprocessors, BI Technologies recently introduced a molypermalloy powder (MPP) based family of surface mount inductors capable of handling up to 40 A. The HM73 series are self-shielding inductors available in 16 standard ratings from 0,1 µH to 8,2 µH, in a surface mount package.

Despite their higher power ratings, the HM73 Series inductors feature board-mounted profiles of only 3,5 to 5,5 mm with footprints as small as 8,5 by 7,5 mm. According to the manufacturer, the HM73 Series inductors can pack 400 µJ/cm3, unlike 'power choke' style devices that are rated to 100 µJ/cm3. The inductors are expected to find wide application in voltage regulation circuits on motherboards in desktop, and laptop computers, servers and handheld microprocessor-based devices.

The series features a unique design using ultrathin rectangular wires - a feature that makes conductor density more than 20% higher than round core wires and provides lower DC resistance and higher efficiency.

The series, ranging from 0,1-8,2 µH, and from 6-40 A (inductance measured at 100 kHz, 0,1 V), feature a DC resistance ranging from 0,08 to 15,2 mOhm. Operating temperature range is -40 to +125°C.
