Mixed-signal ICs for motor control

24 April 2002 Analogue, Mixed Signal, LSI

Designers of motor-based systems now have additional options to help simplify system design, reduce board space and increase system reliability by using analog integrated circuits (ICs) from Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector. The company's MC33886 and MC33887 H-Bridge power switch ICs complement its line of microcontrollers (MCUs) and (DSPs) for motor control. The devices are for systems that use DC motors and stepper motors, such as copiers, printers, robotics, servo systems, marine autopilots, automotive cruise controls, CNC machining systems, electrical actuators in appliances, power hand tools, and antenna and dish positioning systems.

"Motorola is aggressively expanding its standard analog IC portfolio for a wide variety of motor control, motion control, static load control, embedded power supply, and wired communication applications," said Bob Jarrett, corporate vice president and GM of Motorola's Analog Products Division. "These power switches, when combined with Motorola's highly successful microcontrollers and DSPs, as well as development tools and technical support, provide our customers with comprehensive system solutions."

Manufactured with Motorola's proprietary SMARTMOS process, the MC33886 and MC33887 switches combine high-density/high-speed logic with precision analog and high-voltage/high-current power circuitry. Key features of the devices include built-in current limiting, built-in thermal shutdown, built in under-voltage shutdown, versatile output control, and load status reporting. In addition, both ICs include robust built-in protection features and logic level control and communication to help simplify embedded system design efforts, lower system costs, and increase system reliability.

Features

The MC33886 and MC33887 H-Bridges are power ICs that contain the essential control logic, charge pump, gate drive, and high current MOSFET circuitry. They can drive highly inductive loads with steady-state currents up to 5,2 A in both directions. Additionally, the current drive can be pulse-width-modulated (PWM) at frequencies up to 10 kHz with the MC33886, and up to 20 kHz with the MC33887. Under-voltage, over-temperature, and over-current conditions are detected and reported through a status flag output.

For the MC33886, output control is via two independent inputs. The MC33887 is similar to the MC33886, but includes two additional features: a load current feedback feature and a sleep mode feature.
